ACLE 2016: Opportunities beckon in challenging times

Trade fairs are more important in difficult times and these are without doubt both difficult and changing. The news from the second day of the 2016 edition of the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) is that meetings have been more positive than expected and that visitor numbers overall and from China are up compared to last year. China has not come to a stop and a maturing market offers new opportunities which in reality might be easier for the tanner to achieve than one driven by cheap labour and low cost. Arguments were presented on the first day of the fair indicating that China is now a country that has developed strong environmental and financial regulations. This means that for many it remains an excellent place to do business and that wealthier, more sophisticated customers make a great target for quality leathers.

Now with the automobile industry in the lead the Chinese market continues to excite alongside the steadily rising importance of countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. All have a chance to take market share as companies rethink their programmes.

Add to this the new offers from the chemical companies. New vegetable tanning offers for automobiles and the Lanxess launch of their total process putting an end to chrome shaving and using the protein back in the leather. An outstanding piece of out-of-the-box thinking - all being offered in two boxes - or two container sized units to be precise.

Innovation for all from Fenice

The booth of the Italian chemical company Fenice attracted a lot of interest today. Fenice was demonstrating to attentive and impressed visitors its newly launched Waterstain leather finishing solutions.

According to Fenice’s Marketing Manager, Achi Yu, the Waterstain line of products consists of a series of water-based fluid cream dyes that revolutionise the finishing and dyeing of crust leathers. They are suitable for shoe, leathergoods and garment manufacturers as well as for tanneries.

They enable a wide range of special effects to be achieved such as the 2-tone effect that can be obtained by applying a dark base colour followed by a Decolor lotion. “The result is a natural looking effect, that is durable and long lasting,” explained Yu.

Huni: Automation equals quality and sustainability

A seminar advocating the complete automation of leather processing was held on Day 2 of ACLE. Ralph Arbeid of the Swiss company Huni, presented the advantages of the full automation of leather processing. “In addition to saving water and energy, automation enables consistent quality to be produced, avoids human mistakes and promotes safety,” Arbeid explained.

Undeniably, automatization requires considerable investment, but according to Arbeid, return on investment is fast and secure.

Huni has been involved in the tanning business for more than 100 years. It provides solutions ranging from advanced drum technology to centralised control of operations. One of company’s most important target markets is China.

Brazil: Exporting and marketing leather to China

27 Brazilian companies and the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) are showcasing their articles with the support of Brazilian Leather, a project focused on promoting leather exports and coordinated by CICB in partnership with Apex Brazil. The event is expected to generate US$ 200 million in business for Brazil within the next 12 months compared to the US$150 million estimated at last year’s show.

Brazil sells leather to over 100 countries worldwide but China is still the main export destination. JBS Couros, as the world’s biggest tannery, sells approximately 38% of its exports to China and ACLE also acts as a business platform to make and consolidate new contacts from the international buyers that come to Shanghai each year.

Among the exhibitors are Couro do Norte, which was awarded Tanner of the Year 2016 and Nova Kaeru, a company that specialises in tanning pirarucu fish leather
