Under these circumstances and after several in-depth communications, the organisers, in view of the health and safety of our exhibitors and buyers and the impact on the exhibition, made the hard decision to announce that ACLE will be postponed from 1st – 3rd September 2020 to 31st August– 2nd September 2021 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.
The All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) took place in early September amid the announcement of China’s latest round of retaliatory tariffs toward the US. These new tariffs may mostly affect China’s salted and wet blue hide imports. However, as always the industry is resilient and optimistic, as expressed by ACLE’s exhibitors who have demonstrated remarkable ingenuity in shouldering the crisis.
Innovation in tanning, marketing that’s better targeted to younger demographics and a more responsive and creative approach to customers – these are among the critical points raised during the 2019 Shanghai Shake-up during ACLE in September, “Redesigning a Future for Leather”. The event featured two panels, one focused on How to Transform the Role of the Tanner and the second on Why Aren’t Designers Using Leather?
China’s leading international event for the leather industry wrapped up another successful edition, its 22nd, on 5 September 2019. 1,056 exhibitors from 34 countries and regions were joined by more than 23,300 visitors in Shanghai from 3 - 5 September. Over 20,000 buyers were from the major manufacturing provinces in China. The fair covered 92,000 sqm and 8 halls of the Shanghai New International Exhibition Center (SNIEC).
If 2018 was a challenging year 2019 has so far been much worse. High demand for beef has pushed hides onto the market when demand for leather is weakest. There were a few complaints about how quiet it was at the opening hour, but it was just as well as many stands were not complete or unmanned. By mid morning the rain had gone and the crowds had arrived; the stands were busy. In fact, initial figures suggested attendance a little ahead of last year.
The leather sector is facing a double pronged assault as we approach the fourth quarter of 2019 – namely the ongoing tariff war between the US and China and the growing competition from synthetic materials in the design and manufacture of apparel and footwear.
With the 22nd edition of the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) due to take place on 3-5 September at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Pudong, Shanghai, the co-organisers, APLF Ltd and the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), have set up a comprehensive programme with onsite activities to complement the trade fair and provide useful information for both exhibitors and visitors, to assist them when it comes to planning and making business decisions.
The All China Leather Exhibition is one of the most renowned professional leather exhibitions in the world, with synthetic materials an integral part of it. In recent years, international exhibitors and international buyers have complained to our association that some synthetic material exhibitors use the word “leather” in their English promotional materials.
In this space we very often discuss alternative materials, the role of leather in various sectors and other current issues that affect the whole supply chain. At ACLE in Shanghai -- coming up in just a few months -- we want to take advantage of the gathering of industry professionals to drill down and look at what has to change to put leather on a new path to sustained success.
In its 22nd year, ACLE, China´s definitive leather event is to be held from 3 – 5 September 2019 at the New International Expo Centre in Pudong, Shanghai. The leather industry continues to labour under low demand and low prices – neither of which are beneficial for tannery production or margins.
This 22nd edition of the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) will take place at the New International Expo Centre in Pudong, Shanghai from 3 – 5 September 2019. The event covers a total exhibition area of 92,000 square metres and 8 halls of international and domestic tanneries, machinery and chemical suppliers.
The 2018 edition of the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) was marked by a double anniversary. This year is the 20th anniversary of the fair and it is also the 30th anniversary of the China leather Industry Association (CLIA) founded in 1988 as the only official body for the leather and footwear sectors in China.
The accepted back story of the leather industry is that the supply of leather cannot grow to meet demand because the livestock – bovine, ovine, caprine or porcine – that provide the hides and skins are never kept for making leather, only for meat and milk. Consequently as the global population rises leather has become scarcer and as this continues leather should become more valuable, increasingly moving into luxury segments. .
The economic status of China's leather, fur and leather goods industries maintained steady growth but are slowing down in the first half of 2018.
This year has been particularly challenging for the global leather industry with raw material prices declining after APLF ended in mid-March and are not at their lowest levels since the height of the financial crisis in 2008 / 2009. This is due to an overhang of raw material in the pipeline and hesitant global demand for leather, mainly in the footwear sector since early 2015.
Day two of the 2018 ACLE may have started slowly but soon got busy before lunch; perhaps the delay was a consequence of the excellent anniversary dinner. For there is no doubt that the fair is overall busier and more active than had been expected by many as they set out for Shanghai.
Trying to quickly get to grips with a market when you are not long off an intercontinental flight is not easy. Even more so when the air is full of threats and counter threats regarding tariff wars between China and America.
Taking place in Shanghai from 29 - 31 August, ACLE is celebrating 20 years since its launch in Beijing in 1998 alongside the 30th anniversary of the founding of the China Leather Industry Association in 1988.
In less than one month the 20th anniversary edition of China’s leading event for the leather industry will be inaugurated at the New International Expo Centre in Shanghai.
The mainstays of leather demand since 2015 have been the upholstery and automotive sectors as the demand for leather uppers and soles has declined in favour of synthetic materials and the boom in the popularity of sneakers worldwide.
The Shanghai Shake-up conference will offer vision, inspiration and information about materials innovation in a pragmatic way. It combines topics for leather and non-leather from surprising yet highly relevant angles, offering a roadmap to future growth for the sector.
Given the pressure that the leather industry has been under in recent years, you might almost forget that leather still has the smell of success.

Life is like a curate’s egg and so can trade shows. Short periods of quiet interspersed with manic periods of business. Certainly this characterises the second day. Overall slightly lower traffic passed the stands but significantly there appeared to be more new and potentially important customers. All the chemical companies were busy with new products being well received.
The 20th edition of the ACLE began with some 750 delegates mentally exhausted by an outstanding Day minus one at the 3rd World Leather Congress. Here they had worked through a hectic day interrogating the modern consumer, the world of e-commerce, the implications of the expectations for rapid production and almost instant delivery to consumers and all the aspects of modern corporate social responsibility (CSR).

After a slow start to 2016 mainly due to the lack of footwear orders from the developed western economies, China’s leather sector and its overall exports reawakened at the end of Q1. A mild winter, excess inventory and flat retail sales both in Europe and the USA contributed directly to sluggish manufacturing activity in China’s footwear factories.
